fut Stanislas Charles Henri Laurent Dupuy de Lme lorsqu'il s'agissait<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>d'inventer et de construire bateaux vapeur ou lourds cuirasss
indestructibles, il est moins souvent fait allusion l'intrt qu'il
porta aux plus lgers que l'air, les ballons monts, qu'il aurait voulu
rendre dirigeables. Dirigeables, c'est beaucoup dire, car il s'agissait en
fait de pouvoir dvier le ballon vers la droite ou vers la gauche mais
dans la direction que lui imprimait le vent.
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:35.45pt">Pourtant,
en 1870, il va faire une proposition tonnante dans des circonstances non
moins tonnantes.</p>

encercle par l'arme "prussienne" se trouve coupe du reste
de la France et en butte de srieuses<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>difficults pour<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>acheminer
courriers et missives vers la province et le gouvernement repli Tours
pour quelque temps encore.
</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:35.45pt">Pendant
toute la dure du Sige de Paris (septembre 1870 fvrier 1871), la
technique la plus efficace a t celle des ballons monts, mais
ceux-ci, livrs au gr du vent, n'atterrissent pas toujours o il
faudrait, faute de pouvoir tre dirigs. Dupuy de Lme va faire des
propositions au Gouvernement de Dfense Nationale et il prsente un long
mmoire trs technique sur la direction des ballons l'Institut le 7
octobre 1870. En voici un bref rsum<a style="mso-footnote-id:ftn1" href="#_ftn1" name="_ftnref1" title><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; mso-fareast-font-family: Calibri; mso-fareast-theme-font: minor-latin; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-bidi; mso-ansi-language: FR; mso-fareast-language: EN-US; mso-bidi-language: AR-SA; mso-special-character: footnote" class="MsoFootnoteReference">[1]</span></a>.<o:p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:35.45pt">Pour
maintenir la direction des arostats sensiblement en ligne droite, il
faut renoncer la forme sphrique du ballon ordinaire. Il opte donc<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>pour une forme allonge, mesurant prs de 40<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>mtres de long pour un diamtre maximum de 15 mtres dont le
volume atteindra 3600 mtres cube. La nacelle est aussi d'une forme
allonge et rigide, taye de faon viter un "<i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">balan
de l'avant l'arrire</i>", et il propose d'introduire dans le
ballon gonfl au gaz d'clairage (il devait l'tre l'hydrogne), un
autre petit ballon (364 m3) rempli d'air permettant<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>une plus grande facilit pour les montes et les descentes. Une
voile triangulaire de quinze mtres carr place sous le ballon servira
de gouvernail. L'objectif fix ce ballon pisciforme est de se dplacer
la vitesse de huit kilomtres l'heure par rapport l'air ambiant
compte tenu de la rsistance de l'air. L'ingnieur de la Marine s'appuie
alors sur ses connaissances des navires et de l'hydrodynamique pour dterminer
la puissance ncessaire pour<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>faire
avancer son ballon dans l'air et de savants calculs le conduisent
proposer </p>

qui produira un travail moteur d'environ 30 kgm. En prsence de cette hlice
comme force motrice, il [lui] a paru avantageux d'employer simplement la
force des hommes. Quatre hommes peuvent sans fatigue soutenir pendant une
heure, en agissant sur une manivelle, un travail de 30 kgm qui n'exige de
chacun d'eux que 7 kgm. Avec une relve de deux hommes, chacun d'eux
pourra travailler une heure, se reposer une demi-heure et ainsi de suite,
pendant les dix heures du voyage qui sont une des donnes de cette tude".

Bien sr, une telle gnrosit va susciter des jalousies et les
concurrents de Dupuy de Lme mettent les bouches doubles pour
construire avant lui un dirigeable. Nadar reprochera en novembre le cot
du ballon que Dupuy de Lme n'arrive pas construire cause des
difficults techniques.

sujet de la "force motrice":

que "<i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">ce plan offre l'inconvnient
de ne pas prsenter le caractre de la nouveaut. Il est difficile de
voir en quoi il diffre du systme de M. Giffard Les travaux ont t
commencs, ils ont tran en longueur, la guerre s'est termine, la
Commune a pass sur Paris, ils ne sont pas encore achevs</i>" mais
il formule des "<i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">vux sincres
pour que M. Dupuy mette excution son projet intressant et qu'une
exprience soit rapidement ralise</i>"

<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify;text-indent:35.45pt">Les
conditions pour la mise au point d'un tel engin n'taient sans doute pas
les meilleures, mais dans l'ensemble les critiques l'gard de Dupuy de
Lme sont mesures, voire favorables en ce qui concerne la conception
technique de l'arostat et tout le monde attend avec impatience le jour o
le grand homme fera son exprience de dirigeabilit d'un ballon mont.
Elle a lieu le 2 fvrier 1872<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>au
Fort-Neuf Vincennes. Le ballon part avec son bord "<i style="mso-bidi-font-style:normal">MM.
Dupuy de Lme, Zd, ingnieur de la Marine, Yon et Dartois, aronautes
collaborateurs, Bouron contrematre de la maison Claparde, et les huit
hommes qui devaient manuvrer le treuil et se relayer"</i>.

contenait 2500 mtres cubes de gaz. Le filet qui entourait le ballon tait
fix une grande traverse infrieure, l'arrire de laquelle se
trouvait une voile triangulaire reprsentant le gouvernail et la quille.
Cette traverse en bois soutenait une machine vapeur avec sa chaudire
et ses accessoires. Cette machine, qui quivalait la force de trente
hommes et qui ne pesait que 150 kilogrammes, faisait mouvoir une hlice.<o:p>

parfaitement sentir. A peine avais-je tir une des deux cordes de manuvre,
du gouvernail, "dit M. Giffard en 1852, "que je voyais immdiatement
l'horizon tourner autour de moi. <span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>L'hlice,
mise en mouvement par la vapeur, suffisait dplacer l'arostat latralement,
et, par moment, le navire arostatique rsistait l'intensit du vent

Sige de Paris" n'est pas, loin s'en faut, un travail d'historien.
Il s'agit seulement pour les parties II et III, d'une sorte de
"compilation" de notes de lectures et d'extraits d'ouvrages
qu'il me semblait <span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>intressant
de porter la connaissance des socitaires. Il n'tait question au dbut
que de chercher quelques informations sur les inscriptions portes sur la
lettre, mais, de "fil en aiguille", les recherches sur internet
ou dans des ouvrages chins chez les brocanteurs m'ont conduit
constater que cet pisode des Ballons Monts du Sige de Paris ne se rsumait
pas "la fuite de Gambetta", mais qu'il s'agissait bien plutt
d'une vritable pope vcue par d'intrpides pionniers de l'aronautique.
